Holdingford Water & Sewer Project 2011

HOLDINGFORD — Holdingford’s water system is expected to be ready for the future after completion of about $4.5 million in water and street improvements.
City Engineer Scott Lange said there are three aspects to the work. Much of the processing equipment in the city’s wastewater treatment plant will be replaced, water and sewer mains on all city streets north of Washington Street and east of the Two Rivers river, except county roads and North High Court, will be replaced. New water meters will be installed to ensure accurate meter readings and billing, Lange said, and affected streets will be resurfaced when the work is done.
The city’s wastewater treatment plant was built in the early 1990s. The city’s water and sewer lines are more than 50 years old with some inching toward the 75-year mark, he said.
“The equipment is just worn out and needs to be replaced,” Lange said. “It’s a nice project. From a water quality perspective, (residents) will notice a difference.”
There also will be better water connections for firefighters and improved flow throughout the city, he said.
Replacement of the water and sewer mains started at the end of May. Improvements to the wastewater treatment plant will begin midsummer and the plan is for the new water meters to be in place this fall.
The goal is for contractors to complete all work near October or November, Lange said. A public meeting is slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Holdingford City Hall to provide the community with project updates.
Public meetings will be at 6 p.m. every Wednesday throughout the duration of the project.
The USDA Rural Development program is funding the project with a $3,873,000 loan and a $578,000 stimulus grant

HOLDINGFORD, Minn. - With an ambulance on the way, Holdingford firefighter Kelly Kobernusz arrived at Sarah Andersen's home just in time to deliver her son, Hunter.

Andersen and her fiance, Bill Shank of Holdingford, had several false alarms while waiting for their son to be born, but when they finally knew it was time, early Friday morning, there was little time to prepare.

"(Bill was) getting my other two children ready to go to the hospital and (I) just knew it was time to have the baby, so then I had him call 9-1-1," Andersen said.

"You do all the planning and preparation to make sure everything goes well, but it's never up to you, I guess. it's up to the baby and the forces at hand to let you know what's gonna happen," Shank said.

With the ambulance about 30 minutes away, the Holdingford Fire Department was called, and Kelly Kobernusz was first on the scene.

"I came in, and she was obviously in heavy labor at the time ... and things were progressing," Kobernusz said.

"As soon as (Kobernusz) opened the door, the baby was starting to come out already. So he didn't even have time to come around the couch. He just sort of leaned over the couch. I was kneeling on the floor and we delivered the baby," Shank said.

Dorin Rausch, the fire department's medical officer was next on the scene. She became an Emergency Medical Technician in Dec. and got to experience the fire department's first delivery along with several others who came to help.

"When I got in there, Kelly was out the door. He needed some air, and that was fine," Rausch said. "The baby was breathing fine, color was good, moving his arms and legs. It was great."

"(We are) Very lucky that Kelly got here when he did," Andersen said.

"CPR; you can practice, bandaging, bleeding; you can practice all those scenarios. But you can't really practice childbirth," Kobernusz said.

"(I am) still surprised it happened the way it did. And (Hunter) has the nickname of 'Couch potato' now," Andersen said.

"Everyone was healthy and happy, and it worked the way it was supposed to, and you can't say anything else," Kobernusz said. "It's just perfect."

Andersen and baby Hunter went to the hospital in Albany, about 25 minutes after he was born, but were able to leave on Saturday. Anderson said Hunter is healthy and spends most of his time sleeping.

Cross Country Cyclist Discovers Lake Wobegon Trail

I went to a meeting for the fall Family Picnic on August 29th tonight. There was a interesting bicyclist by the name Randy Modesitt, who was looking to have a restful evening as storms had come through the area today.
He had not been aware of the trail here, until he met some other bikers and they told him about it. He was very impressed with the beauty and uniqueness of it.
He is on a cross country bicycling trip from Portland Oregon to Parkersburg, West Virginia. Where hie is a 5 th grade teacher.

Wooden Train for Holdingford Playground

In 2009 Holdingford is celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the first train arriving in town. To honor this event the Holdingford Lions and several local businesses have pooled their efforts and have built a wooden train. The size of each car is approximately 4' wide 6' tall and 8' long.

In four nights of work the group has changed a big pile of wood into a four car train. The cars include a locomotive, a coal car, a tanker and a caboose. Some finish work is still needed but the train will be ready to be in the Holdingford Dayz parade July 11th. After the parade it will be set up in for kids to play in and on it. A decision about whether it will be set up at Veteran's Park or the Trailhead Park is still under discussion.

The organizations sharing in the cost and effort include Headly Hardware, Scegura Insurance Agency, St. Rosa Lumber, Ron Schmidt Northwestern Mutual and the Holdingford Lions. Special thanks go to Berkon Outdoors for the use of their shop and tools to complete the work.

Holdingford Lions Club • April 3, 2009 At the March 9 Holdingford Lions Club meeting, Lion Al Leinen was presented with the Melvin Jones Award. This award is named for the founder of Lions Clubs International and is given for dedication to the Lion’s motto “We Serve.”

Leinen has served the Holdingford Lions Club in many ways since joining in 1975. He has been president (in 1983-4, 1990-1 and 2008-9), vice president (1981-3, 1988-90, 2005-8), secretary (1980-1 and 1984-5) and treasurer (1994-98). He also was co-chair of the very successful covered bridge project.

We have received notice of our 2009 tax capacity rates from the County. Our rate went up this year from last year. Last year our rate was 69.038 percent, this year it increased to 70.502 percent. No, we did not raise the tax levy. Because of the present economic climate, the majority of the property in Holdingford went down in value. This causes the tax capacity rate to go up to collect the amount of taxes the City of Holdingford levied. By the way this levy amount has not changed since 2002. Even with the tax rate going up, the majority of property owners should not see an increase to the City portion of their property taxes.

As I wrote in January, the City of Holdingford has been trying to qualify for some of the economic stimulus money the federal government is providing to stimulate the economy, to repair some of the problems we have been having with our water distribution system. Good News! We have been given preliminary approval for a grant and loan package to replace all of the 1930s water and sewer lines in the city (with the exception of Main Street) as well as updating some of the equipment in the waste water treatment plant. Our engineering firm estimates this to be an approximate $4,019,000 project with $1,455,970 paid by grant and the remainder with a low interest loan. These are very rough estimates; we will have a better idea of true costs once the design engineering has been done which will take most of this year to complete. If all goes as planned, we will be calling for bids in early 2010 and start digging in April of 2010, and have the project completed in the fall of 2010. We will keep you informed as the project progresses.

We have received a letter from the U.S. Department of Commerce asking us to set up a complete count committee for the 2010 census. The idea of this committee is to help inform the public of the need to fill out the census accurately and send it in. Local Government Aid and project grant formula’s use population figures and mean incomes to determine the amount of dollars a city receives for the following ten years. We know of cities that did not get an accurate count in 2000 and consequently have lost thousands of dollars in State and Federal aid. So it’s very important we get an accurate count in 2010. I’m looking for some individuals or an organization who would like to get this count committee going and run with it. I have the information and would be willing to help you get started. We are going to remodel the bathrooms in the Municipal Liquor Store. We have approximately $30,000 of lottery profits saved up to do this much needed project. We hope to start in April and finish as fast as possible so as to not inconvenience the store patrons for too long. We will have portapotties set up while the project is in process.

The hydraulic pump in the snow plow truck gave up and died of old age. The cost of repair was a little better than $3500. I would like to publicly thank Holding Township for the one day use of their truck, while ours was being repaired, Thank-You!

We have been notified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that the City of Holdingford has been awarded the Minnesota Wastewater Treatment Facility Operational Award for the period of October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008. Good job Jerry and Jeremy!

The Municipal Liquor Store will host a 500 card tournament Saturday evening March 14, with the band Corridor playing afterwards and the Fire Department will have its annual breakfast Sunday, March 15.

Kathy O’Hara who is in charge of reservations for the City Community Center is now also in charge of renting the Veteran’s Park shelter. She can be reached at (320) 293-6687 to set up reservations or answer any questions about renting either of these facilities.

My goodness time is speeding up. So many things have been happening.
*First a photo of the part of the. Halloween set up by the Petals to Pedals Garden club.
*The fall Area Family Picnic organized by the Lions Club was another great sucess. People still are impresed by the FREE ! good food, music and fellowship that happens at this event. Looking forward to next year.
*Herman Ebnet the City Maintenance Supervisor & employee for 34 years is retiring the end of October. His expert knowledge & interest in the welfare of the community will be missed very much.

As you can tell riding horses is something Herman enjoys a lot. Happy Trails Herman.

Finishing the Community Pond

This pond/fountain is a community project that is getting real close to being finished. As you can see the fountain & pond are operational it has some plants in the pond and goldfish. Now it's adding plants around the outside and planting of grass. Last winter it was just a dream but thanks to some local companies, Polar Tank Repair and Two River Enterprises for welding up the 12'x14' stainless tank. Herman Ebnet for providing the machinery and helping move the donated rock from local land developer Tim Berschied. The Petals to Pedals Garden Club got it built. It's a nice addition one can view as you ride by on the Lake Wobegon Trail.

Special guest at Holdingford Daze was Elaine Davis author of "Minnesota 13" she was gracious enough to donate the proceeds of her book sales that day $544 to the Holdingford Area Historical Society, with the money to go toward restoration of the old city maintenance building to be used as a history museum. It's one of the oldest buildings in town.

Lions to celebrate state's longest-covered bridge

The Holdingford Lions, on behalf of the Holdingford Community, invite the public to celebrate the dedication of the newest covered bridge in Minnesota. The dedication will take place at the bridge that is one block west of Main and Cedar Streets in Holdingford on Saturday, June 14. The day will begin at 8 a.m., with the ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. After that, 300+ bikers will participate in the Carmel Roll Ride on the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail. Invitations have been sent to Gov. Pawlenty and Garrison Keillor and state and local representatives.

The Holdingford Lions built the covered bridge on the Lake Wobegon Trail over Two Rivers River in Holdingford with the help of the U.S. Army Reserves. The Lake Wobegon Trail is used by bicyclists and walkers during the summer and by snowmobilers in the winter.

“The trail is one of the most beautiful biking/hiking trails in America with many great views, wildlife, farmland, creeks, lakes and hills,” said Joe Christensen, secretary of the Holdingford Lions.

This bridge is now the longest covered bridge in Minnesota and one of the longest covered bridges on a trail anywhere.

“The Lions feel the covered bridge will increase tourism to the community and improve our economic development,” Christensen said. “This bridge cover will also improve the safety and aesthetic quality of the bridge.

Construction will begin Friday, May 2, on the covering of the bridge on the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail over Two Rivers-River in Holdingford. When completed this will be the longest covered bridge in Minnesota.
The Lake Wobegon Trail is used by bicyclists and walkers during the summer and by snowmobilers in the winter. This is a great attraction for Holdingford. The trail in the area is one of the most beautiful biking and hiking trails in America with many great views, farmland, lakes, creeks, wildlife and hills. The Lions Club members feel that this project will increase tourism to the community and improve our economic development. A cover will also improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the bridge.
The Holdingford Lions have spearheaded this project with the cooperation of the City of Holdingford, Stearns County Parks, the Lake Wobegon Trail Association and many other organizations. The US Army Reserve's 367th Engineer Battalion will provide the labor for building the cover. For the past several weeks parts have been prefabricated in Mankato. On May 2 the parts will be
shipped to Holdingford and the actual construction will begin. It is estimated that it will take three weekends to complete the work
On May 3,the Holdingford community will hold a community work day. Some people will be planting trees along. the trail south of the bridge. Other people will be staining the cedar siding and still other people will be painting the railroad boxcar at the city's trailhead park. Along with the Lions Club, the Holdingford Garden Club, the Holdingford High School Student Council and FFA, the St. Joseph Society, the Five Parish Youth Group, Helping Hands Outreach and many individuals will work on these projects.
Materials for the bridge cover are being paid by local contributions. Many individuals and organizations have contributed already. Most notable are payments or pledges from the Holdingford, Albany and St. Stephen Lions, Holdingford American Legion, Holdingford Commercial Club, Lake Wobegon Trail Association and individual Lions.
In the near future an entry park will be created. This will provide parking and a handicapped accessible sidewalk a short distance from the bridge. The Minnesota Statehood Sesquicentennial Commission has awarded the city $3,000 to provide
information at this entry park Cooperating with the city and the Holdingford Lions in creating this park will be the Holdingford Area Historical Society and the Holdingford Garden Club.
The idea of covering the old railroad bridge over Two, Rivers River began at the same time as the railroad was being converted into the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail. The City of Holdingford, under the direction of Mayor Rosemary Scepaniak, applied for a grant but was not successful. A brief comment was made to a Lions Club member who mentioned it to the club as a possible project. Another Lion was retiring from the Army and had worked on similar projects in the service. In 2005 the project began to take shape. During 2006 old plans and grant papers were found and evaluated. An architect was hired and discussions began with the Army Reserves. In February of 2007 the Stearns County Board of Commissioners and in March 2007 the US Army Reserves approved the project.

Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon

The St. Cloud River Runners
are sponsoring the "First Annual Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon" it will start 7:00 a.m. on May 10, 2008 at the Holdingford Trail Head on the Lake Wobegon Trail.

The race is run entirely on the Lake Wobegon Trail. Runners will head north from the Holdingford Trail Head for .86 miles and then back through the town of Holdingford and the towns of Albany, Avon, and St. Joseph. The race finishes at the trail head in St. Joseph.
The trail is primarily rural except as it passes through the four small towns along the route. Many people feel that the trail from Holdingford to St. Joseph is the prettiest portion of the Lake Wobegon Trail.
They were going to limit it to 50 runners but I see that has been raised to 100 and the race field is full.

Millions (A Lottery Story)

The independent film "Millions (A Lottery Story" I had made a post on it after it first came out last year, although I still haven't had a chance to see it. It has hit the big time as far as I am concerned, now that my favorite movie reviewer Roger Ebert has reviewed it. Following is Mr Ebert's review of the movie. I am in particularly pleased with the way he wrote about the Holdingford people, as my wife and I moved here 40 years ago when I started teaching and raised our family here. I know the Holdingford folks in the movie and the other local winners, they are all good down to earth people,and everyone around here is happy for their good fortune. Below is the review.

'Millions (A Lottery Story)" is not so much about six lottery winners as about six+people who I watched with growing fascination and affection. What did I expect when the movie began? Former millionaires now on Skid Row, I suppose, contrasted with misers counting their compound interest and intercut with bizarre misadventures. What I found were people who, if I may say so, are utterly unfazed by their sudden wealth, and who have developed strategies for coping not with wealth or poverty, but with life. They all seem happy, and it has nothing to do with the lottery.
The movie follows four kitchen workers from a Minnesota high school and two New Yorkers who were once famous because they were the first to win $5 million at the dawn of the lottery and became the stars of television ads. The Minnesotans, 16 altogether, split up $95,450,000 on a shared Powerball ticket, which works out to $5,965,625 apiece, a figure none of them ever once mentions.
They're from Holdingford, Minn., a town which Garrison Keillor himself once called "the Lake Wobegon-ist town in Minnesota." The town is so typical of his monologues that not only are the high schoolers' grades above average, but the interstate highway makes a four-mile detour just to avoid it. Of the four women we meet, all come from large families (I'm talking like 11 or 16 kids), all worked hard on family dairy farms, many still keep dairy cattle as a second job, and none of them quit their jobs in the high school kitchen.
Phylis Breth is most eloquent about staying on the job. "These are my best friends, and I love my work." She is a dishwasher and uses a little laugh to end many sentences. "I've got bad knees, I've had four surgeries, and this job keeps you going. On days when they serve mashed potatoes or cheese, it gets pretty hectic." Like some of the others, she bought a new house, not a mansion, just comfy, and she finally has what she long dreamed of, a refrigerator with an ice-cube maker. She still hits all the garage sales, pouncing on a $2 ice cream scoop.
Of the New Yorkers, who won in the early 1970s, Lou Eisenberg lives in retirement in West Palm Beach, Fla., in a very basic condo. All of his winnings are gone, and he gets by on Social Security and a small pension. But he has a girlfriend, knows people everywhere he goes, bets at the dog track daily. He spent every lottery check almost as it came in. Why didn't he invest for the future? "I never thought I would live to be 76."
The other, Curtis Sharp, has also run through his winnings. Some of them went to invest in a company claiming to make an electric automobile that could run forever without ever being recharged. At one point the company was valued at "billions," he assures us, before the government came in and charged the organizer with selling fraudulent stock. Curtis still believes the guy was on the level: "Someday that investment is going to pay off." Having been "a drinker and fornicator," he moved to Nashville to buy a beer joint. Then he saw the light, found Jesus, and is a preacher.
The two of them became famous for their New York Lotto commercials. "A Jew and a black man," Lou says. "A good fit." Curtis was known for his bowler hats and collected 100. Before winning, Lou had owned a beauty shop, but something came over him one day, he developed panic attacks and found he could not speak or look people in the eye. He got a job at $240 a week screwing in light bulbs. The Lotto saved him: "It was like a shot in the arm." It sure was. We see clips of him gabbing away on TV with Johnny Carson, Regis Philbin, Ted Koppel and Sammy Davis Jr.
At times in this film I am reminded of work by documentary maker Errol Morris. The director, Paul La Blanc, has the same ear for the American vernacular and the same eye for obsessions. Take Phylis Breth, for example. Many women clean house for days before letting a camera crew into their homes, but let's say her housekeeping is not Wobegonian. Her homemade salsa is in a salsa jar, for example, with the original label still on.

The Breths heat their home all winter with wood in a climate that goes to 30 below. "I've burned wood all my life, and I will keep on burning wood as long as the good Lord lets me," he says.
Getting to know these people, I realized I knew others exactly like them. The women could come from my Downstate family. Giving me a recipe once, my Aunt Mary said, "One tater for everybody, one for the pot, and one for fear of company." For fear. Perfect. I wrote it down as part of the recipe.

The city of Holdingford through Healthy Community Planning Program was granted $10,000 in support of the following community projects:

*Assist Holdingford Lions Club covered bridge project on Lake Wobegon trail.

*Holdingford Lioness Club in conjunction with the City of Holdingford and Holding Township compile a Welcome Packet for new residents in the Holdingford Area. Lioness Club will also develop and distribute brochures about the community of the City of Holdingford and Holding Township, to new residents moving into area.

*Holdingford Area Historical Society
Holdingford Area Historical Society will be incorporated as a non-profit organization. Historical Society will be incorporated as a non-profit organization, to be officially recognized by the MN Historical Society. Secure rights to a one room schoolhouse from the holdingford area, plans and have blueprint for foundation for schoolhouse.

*Petals to Pedals Garden Club
Two park benches will be installed between fountain and "Triangle Garden."Install fountain, electric outlets for fountain and for Christmas decoration. Expand wild flower garden at trailhead: benches, holding pond for fountain, lawn in front of garden.

Fire Department recieves Federal grant

The Fire Department received a $65,000 federal grant last month.

The grant will help the department buy digital radios, a laptop computer and projector. The computer and projector will be used to give presentations to the community. The digital radios are used to communicate easily with other agencies.
The department also purchased 270 smoke detectors. Firefighters went door to door to talk to residents and check their smoke detectors, they gave out batteries to those that needed them if a smoke detector wasn't working and gave out the smoke detectors to those who didn't have them.

Music teacher to Sing In Washington, D.C.

More good Holdingford educator news. Mike Guenin long time elementary music teacher is has been invited to go to Washington, D.C., this weekend to sing at the reunion of the Vietnam Security Police Association, he will sing the song "Before You Go" at the reunion of The 13-year-old organization's reunion which is coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam War Memorial. Mr. Guenin will fly in Friday and sing at a banquet on Saturday — the same day he turns 58. He will leave Sunday to be back in time for school Monday. Guenin, who did not serve in Vietnam, noted that some Vietnam veterans have had difficult lives because of the war and since returning. It's the least I can do is go sing for them," Guenin said. Good for you Mike ! There was a article in the Stearns County Enterprise and the St.Cloud Times also.

Holdingford Express Region 8C Champion

The Holdingford Express is the Region 8C Champion.
Jeff Swenson, their 29-year-old catcher, was named most valuable player of the Region 8C tournament. Elliott says "It's a testimony to how well he hit and how well he caught as the Express made their way back to the state tournament". Read the whole story in Tom Elliott's St Cloud Times Column.
Holdingford plays the Watkins Clippers at 11 a.m. Saturday in Norwood.
Pat at the "Power House" is organizing a bus trip to the game Saturday, check with him for details. Cost is reported to be $15 for the bus, which will leave at 9:00 a.m. They will be staying for the St Stephens's game which is right after.

New Skateboarding Park

Here is another cool project. Andrew Piasecki's dream has come to reality. He wanted to build a skate board park for the City of Holdingford as a Eagle Scout project. He worked through the local H.I.P. committee. Which if you remember got started with training and a grant from the Initiative Foundation. He raised funds from a number of local businesses and organizations including the American Legion, Lions Club, Sno Flyers Club, The Hair Salon, Two Rivers Enterprise donated steel and developer Tim Berscheid has donated a half pipe. The other pieces of equipment include a grind rail, grind box, quarter pipe and launch ramp, that were built by Andrew and friends. It all sits on top of a 30’ x 50’ concrete slab. Good job Andrew! I know the young folks around here will put this to good use.

Lioness New Park Project

The Holdingford Lioness Club has recently taken on the job of renewing the playground equipment at the Legion Memorial Park. Scraping it down to the metal priming and putting a fresh coat of brightly colored paint. The results look great ! Our hats off for a excellent job ! Oh, and the money for the paint was donated by the Holdingford Snow-Flyers Club. A big thanks to them also.

Keaton Guston Wins Awards

From the St. Cloud Times today in in Tom Elliott's sports column he reports that Keaton Gustin, Holdingford High School graduate, who finished his freshman year at Ridgewater Community College, recently earned a boatload of honors after helping the Warriors earn a Junior College World Series berth.
*He was named the Minnesota Community College Player of the Year,
*was a first-team NJCAA All-American,
* the NCJAA Region XIII player of the year
* the MCCC Southern Division player of the year.
He finished the 2007 season with a. 403 average, nine home runs, nine doubles, a triple and 51 RBI.
He also earned KLTF-AM Victory League offensive player of the week honors after helping The Holdingford Express knock off Avon and St. Stephen on its way to the Region 8C Tournament.

A nice article in the St. Cloud Times today about Holdingford Daze . It was a beautiful day and turn out of people. They should have stayed for the polka mass, and the fireman's porkchop dinner, it was good as always... The street dance was packed with people, listening and dancing to the music of the band "Keystones". The fireworks were spectular !! Many folks who have grown up and moved away come back to visit old friends.

Motorcycles On A Run

Most of my posts about bikes have related to the pedaling kind on The Lake Wobegon Trail. The town was a rest stop today for more than 250 motorcycles a run on a warm summer afternoon. There are some beautiful roads for riding around central Minnesota. These folks had a wonderful day for riding.

The Petals To Pedals Garden Club keeps working hard to make the city garden on The Lake Wobegon Trail, more beautiful and unique. The latest additions. A cedar fence section, was put up by the county as a background to a row of arborvitae bushes. The center piece is this neat concrete water fountain. I have to give them credit they did a lot of research to find a cool fountain for a reasonable price. They found it at 'Pam's Butterfly' a concrete ornament Co. by Cushing. They were able to try it out and it works great. The electricity will be in next week. Of course this is a work in progress, more landscaping is to be done. Benches and more gardens are on the list.

Lunch Ladies in Movie

An award-winning documentary by Brooklyn filmmaker Paul La Blanc, called “Millions (A Lottery Story),” tracks six lottery winners to see how instant wealth affected their daily lives. Two of the lottery winners are from New York , lost all their money. His example of the opposite end of spending are some of our 16 Holdingford Lunch Ladies. Who won the Powerball in 2003. The article says "Though the money has made the lives of these rural women more comfortable, it’s clear that what brings them satisfaction is their families and their routines". The documentary won the “Best Brooklyn Filmmaker”, it has been an official selection at more than 30 international film festivals and has been picked up for limited distribution in theaters for later this year.

Surreys on Lake Wobegon Trail

Holdingford Helping Hands has a neat new service for folks. They have purchased three, four wheel Surrey bicycles. Two standard SURREYS that are designed for three adults and two small children and one SURREY LIMOUSINE designed for six adults and two small children. The public can rent these out at $10 and hour for the standard surrey and $15 an hour for the Limo. They will be available Friday and Sunday, noon to 8:00p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Seniors (60) in the area who are registered with Helping Hands, will be able to use the surreys free of charge on Mondays and Wednesdays. Reservations must be made a week in advance, and if requested, Helping Hands will provide a volunteer to pedal the surrey. To reserve a surrey call Helping Hands 746-9960.

Lake Wobegon Trail and Soo Line Recreational Trail Connection

The Morrison County web site posted on 5/31/ that the Soo Line Recreational Trail ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday June 5 at 8:30 am at the Bowlus Pavillion. The St. Cloud Times 6/3 says the ceremony is at 10:00 a. m. on Tuesday. I'd come early and enjoy the open house of the Bowlus Community Center.
At any rate now one can ride from Holdingford on the Lake Wobegon Trail north endure the name change and continue on the Soo Recreational Trail to the Mississippi River. Cool. Happy riding
